RE the photo shown in The Bugle (February 20 edition) of a group of people in the Regent Cinema by Dudley Top Church, sent in by Brian Ansdell of Gornal Wood, who asked for the name of the film star shown.

I think it may have been Miss Joan Davis, who made only a handful of films. The photo was taken in 1946, it was around then she came to Baggeridge Colliery, which was owned by the Earl of Dudley until the National Coal Board took the coal mines over in 1947.

The Earl and Miss Joan Davis rode on horseback up to the colliery from the Earl's Himley Hall home, and one of the miners held their horses while they went sightseeing round the pit bank.

I started work in 1945 on the pit bank before going down the mine in 1947 and there was a lot of talk at the time about the film star visiting the mine.

The name of the miner who held their horses was Harry Ryder from Upper Gornal, to whom Miss Davis gave a £2 tip, as the talk went at the time, which was ten shillings more than I earned in a week.

Reg Evans,

11 Ranscombe Drive,

Lower Gornal.
