ON a recent visit to my parents we got talking about my mother's early years, and she began reminiscing about her father running the Dudley Roller Rink.
She used to spend all her time there in the late 1930s when she was a little girl.
She remembers lots of celebrities who were appearing at the nearby Hippodrome visiting the rink for publicity photos and to relax between shows.
The rink was situated at the rear of the Hippodrome, just near the end of Trindle Road, Dudley.
The entrance was off the old driveway that led to the zoo car park.
I have searched the internet for any information about the place, and apart from an early photograph of the inside that is on sale on a famous auction site, I cannot find any details about its history or demise.
The manager, my Grandfather, was called 'Spen' Long, and my Mom's name is Helen, but everyone called her Pat, and still do!
Spen's proper name was George Spencer Long, but everyone called him Spen.
They lived in Sherwood Avenue, Tipton, and he died very young in 1943.
I wondered if any of The Bugle readers remember visiting the rink, recall my Mom or Grandfather, or have any stories about the place or any photographs?
Pat and her husband Don now live in Sedgley, and are regular readers of The Bugle.
The papers are then passed to me in Preston, Lancashire, so I can keep up to date.
Thank you for an excellent read!
