A COLLEAGUE has drawn my attention to the article in The Bugle (March 28 edition) on entitled Holiday couple find a town link to the American Civil War and they are and appealing for information about Charles Green.

While I am afraid I can shed no light on him, I am compiling a register of veterans of the American Civil War who came, or returned, to the mainland UK after the war and were buried here. I know so far of nearly 1,200 Union veterans or their widows, and about 140 Confederates, and suspect there are very many more. Finding them, and particularly the Confederates, is a difficult task unless they were receiving Federal War pensions. So far, I have found the graves of about 15 per cent of them.

I know of 22 veterans or their widows who lived in the Birmingham area, and four others in the West Midlands, but as yet only know the grave site of one. If any Bugle readers can help me with any more information I would be very grateful. Regards.

Michael Hammerson,

London.
