Can you imagine the media-led hysteria that would be generated if the captain of the top football club in the land, and of the England team to boot, was to visit a local school today?
There would be T.V. cameras, press people, agents, security personnel, and excited children all jostling together in a collective frenzy.
However it was so different when one of the greatest English footballers of all time, Billy Wright, visited Mount Pleasant School, Coseley in 1953/54.
Hardly a head was turned when he sat down for a team photograph with proud young footballers at the school. Note the children and teachers in the background, enjoying playtime, quite unconcerned that the great man was in their midst.
Despite the fact the Bill Wright may not have been ‘idolised’ in the same way that his overpaid counterparts of today are, his name is still revered all these many years later.
