OUR thanks once again go to Terry Church of Wall Heath, for passing on this photograph from friend Roy Lilley, who is the son of one of the players shown.

Last week we printed a photograph of Churchfield Villa FC in 1938, members of the Cradley Heath League, and it could be that the team shown this week — Woodside United from Dudley — may have competed in the same league, as one of the three trophies displayed above (the shield at the centre) was also depicted on the Churchfield photograph.

Roy’s father, Cyril Lilley, is on the back row above, second player from the left.

No date is given for this photograph though, but it must have been from the same late 1930s era.

Woodside United are shown displaying two small cups, as well as the shield, and the board to the left describes these trophies as, “Junior Cup, Griffin Shield, League Championship”.

So it was a highly successful season for the players shown.

Can any reader provide more names we wonder?
