Tonight is a big night in the calender for pop fans. The BRIT awards has provided some really memorable performances over the years. Hoping to make history tonight are Muse, Ben Howard, Emili Sandé, Mumford & Sons, Justin Timberlake, One Direction, Robbie Williams and Taylor Swift. In my excitement, I look back at my top ten BRITs performances of all time.
10- Take That (2011)
Seeing all five members of Take That together makes my 90s heart sing with joy. Especially when they're delivering riotous performances like this one.
9- Justin Timberlake featuring Kylie Minogue (2003)
Two music stars at the peak of their game on top form. JT shows off his singing, dancing and beatboxing skills whilst Kylie joyously raps.
8- Girls Aloud (2009)
A glittering, wonderfully choreographed perforomance of Girls Aloud's best single.
7- Rihanna (2012)
Explosions of colour with a modern pop classic made this energetic Rihanna performance from last year truly joyous.
6- Destiny's Child (2001)
Slightly ruined by the frequent cuts to Bono dad dancing along, but still totally empowering.
5- Blur (2012)
Sorry guys, but this was totally worth cutting Adele's speech short for. This electrifying perfomance had me covered in goosebumps.
4- Kylie Minogue (2002)
In 2002 two of the world's greatest pop songs were mashed together and it BLEW MY MIND. Can't Get You Out Of My Head + Blue Monday + uber cute popster Kylie emerging from a giant record = a truly memorable pop moment.
3- KLF v ENT (1992)
This was surely the most disorientatingly bizarre BRITs performance of all time. Dance act The KLF joined forces with grindcore act Extreme Noise Terror to perform a rocked up verion of '3 A.M. Eternal'. As if that wasn't baffling enough- the dance group took this as their opportunity to announce their retirement from the music industry. Amazing.
2- Michael Jackson... featuring Jarvis Cocker (1996)
This classic moment from 1996 features two of my favourite ever popstars. One being silly, the other being very, very serious. Cocker's attempt to derail Jackson's earnest environmental musings caused quite a stir, and prompted much giggling from 9 year old me.
1- Spice Girls (1997)
OF COURSE this is number one. Surely the most iconic BRITs performance of all time. The Spice Girls were just on the cusp of international domination at this point- this perfomance reveals why they were so successful. Five girls who were at once sassy and acessible delivering punchy pop in a medley. And who doesn't love a good medley. Then there's THAT patriotic dress, which Geri made out of a tea towel and wore with pride despite being told not to. Girl power.
The BRIT awards will be on ITV1 at 8pm tonight.
