LOCAL churches and chapels supported numerous football and other sports teams in the early days of organised sport in the Black Country, and here we see one such group of footballers from the Walsall area.

This was Centenary Wesley FC, in season 1926/27.

Unfortunately, we have no names for the players shown, but we do know that this side won the Walsall district league that season, ahead of Rushall and Birchills Prims.

Centenary Wesley were also runners up in the League Cup, to Wednesbury Town, losing 2-1 at Rusahll in the final.

Centenary Wesley was located in Queen Street, Walsall, with the Centenary Wesley School in John Street, caterinmg for 395 children.

Can readers name any of the players shown?
