DESPITE blustery and wet playing conditions a crowd of 150 were well entertained at Bentley Leisure Pavilion to watch Walsall FC Legends ease to a 3-1 victory against a Darlaston Town XI.
The game raised nearly £700 for the Black Country based club looking to re-form again next season. The Legends team included former Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella as well as Ian Roper, Paul Jones, Brian Palgrave, Andy Reece and Mark Taylor.
Kinsella opened the scoring from 12 yards, and in an evenly fought contest played in an excellent spirit, the crowd were thoroughly entertained with the Darlaston contingent boisterously supporting their team, made up mostly of former players over 35 years old.
Mid-way through the second half Isaac 'Denilson' Cooper added a second for the Legends to put the game out of Darlaston's reach. It stayed at 2-0 until 15 minutes from time when Darlaston introduced 71 year old committee member Gil Preece for a cameo appearance in goal. It will be etched in the memory of all those who watched the game that it took a 25 yard shot from former world Cup Finals player Kinsella to beat the veteran keeper. Wayne Aldersley netted a consolation goal for Darlaston five minutes from time."
