Mr G. Webb, of Farm Road, Langley, brings up the subject of a famous Black Country sporting son, following on from a recent item in our sports pages...
“Having read your A-Z of football international players, last week, I noticed Tommy Smart - Villa right back (my wife's uncle) - was not on the list.
I think it was in the 20's he played, and I believe he was capped five times for England.
His partner at left back (Villa) I think was Tommy Mort, both old fashioned tough no nonsense full backs.
I hope I'm right” Thanks for these comments Mr Webb.
Tony Matthews' list of international players who also represented one of our local clubs - Villa, Albion, Blues Wolves and Walsall - was not intended to be exhaustive. Only a selection of international players was given.
You are certainly correct, Tommy Smart, from Blackheath, did play for England on five occasions whilst on the Villa books. He served the club with distinction from 1920-34.
Prior to joining Villa, Tommy played for Halesowen Town, and when he left Villa Park, he had a spell with Brierley Hill Alliance.
In 1924, both Smart and Mort played in the same game for England (versus Wales), the only occasion on which both England full backs were supplied by Villa.
