At the Christmas get together.

WHEN some past pupils of Tipton Grammar School travelled to a gettogether and a Christmas meal in Bridgnorth last week, they couldn’t have foreseen the amazing concidence that was about to unfold.

On that very day (Thursday 9th December) we had printed on our front page a photograph of a school play at Tipton Grammar School, from around 1954, and this was from the very same period that these ‘old girls’ had attended the school, and in fact one of their number was in the 1954 photograph.

This old photo had been sent to us some weeks before by a reader not connected with the get together.

The picture above and the details which follow have been kindly provided by Freda Williams (nee Silman) who I lived in Bath Road, Tipton in 1954, but now lives in Kidderminster.....

“What a coincidence ! “On the very day, 9th, that we held our yearly 'Christmas Lunch' at The Parlours Hall Hotel in Bridgnorth, you published a photo of some of our group under the heading 'Thespians on stage at Tipton Grammar School' on the front page of your newspaper! “We were all at Tipton Grammar School in 1954 and were re-united as a result of a few of the 'girls' in our year meeting for coffee about 10 years ago.

“They decided to try to contact all the 'girls' within our 'year group' — 66 in total.

This was most successful, although some had sadly died, some moved abroad and some not in very good health.

“There are now 32 of us in regular contact, 56 years later ! We meet twice a year, in December and June for lunch at The Parlours Hall and for the past 3 years some of us have also enjoyed a few days away together on a Spring Warners' Break and also a P & O mini -cruise. In April 2011 we are going to Warners on The Isle of Wight and lunch at Bridgnorth in June and December.

“I am attaching a photo taken today, at The Parlours Hall Hotel, Bridgnorth. R Myatt ( Rosemary Ann), named in your photo, is the first on the left at the front of my photo. We were only a group of ten last week, usually there are about 20 of us but the recent bad weather made it impossible for some of our 'regulars' to attend, as we live all over the U.K.

“Sheila lives in the very north of Scotland, Mary lives in St.Ives, the rest of us in all areas in between.

“Beryl Turner (now Lang), who sent you the photo, was in the year group above us at Tipton Grammar School.

“Between us we have a good collection of 'school photos' and I also have photos of many of the 'Get- Togethers' we have enjoyed since our re-unions started about 10 years ago.

“Looking at the photo from the front, at the left hand side are: Rosemary (Ann) Cooper (nee Myatt) , Enid Simkin (nee Martin), Margery Furness (nee Morgan), Alma Bowen (nee Jones), Claire Simmons (nee Griffiths).

Right hand side: Vanetta Slater (nee Draper), June Box (nee Bagnall), Freda Williams (nee Silman), Margaret Lee (nee Willetts), Margaret Haddon (nee Middlemiss)”.
