VICTORIAN remembrance cards often record the deaths of people who met their ends under tragic circumstances.

None more tragic though than the deaths listed on the card below, which has been sent to us by reader and former Wednesbury resident Len Perry, with the following brief information.

“Whilst checking through some old books, I found this death memorial. It relates to a fire in Wednesbury, 1863. To make it worse it occurred on Christmas day, in 1863. The location given is Little Hill Street, Wednesbury.

“Five children, from 2 years up to 14 years burned to death along with a mother of 58 years, Sarah Bradbury.

“The Little Hill Street that I remember was off Church Hill. But checking further I noticed a Little Hill Street, off Meeting street, that had a workhouse. Still an avid reader of the Bugle, living up North, Len Perry”.

Have started to research my family tree - my mother Margaret Gameson's Great Gradfather was John Gameson who survived the Little Hill Street fire. Am interested in what is detailed on the whole card and would be grateful for a copy via email if possible. Thanking you
