THE iconic Black Country working canal photograph here was taken in 1966, by then teacher training student Dave Macklin from Halesowen, who was making a pictorial record of his hometown and its environs for his course.

Dave has kindly loaned to us the photographs he took, as they give an insight into an age that has largely been lost, although it’s less than fifty years ago.

This image shows tubes from the then Stewarts and Lloyds works at Coombs Wood being transported on ‘the cut’, with worker Jake Lake taking the strain, manoeuvring a boat into position with the use of a hook on a pole.

In the far distance is Mucklow Hill.
