I was on TV when I went to Dudley Zoo

FOLLOWING your request in The Bugle (August 14 edition) for memories of visits to Dudley Zoo I went on a family visit there

I am now 71 years of age, and recall two lion cubs being christened by a film star family. I believe they were Bebe and Ben Lyon.

I went over and stroked the cubs not realising it was being televised. It was shown on Children's Newsreel, Tuesday, and was repeated on a Thursday at around 5.30pm. On the Wednesday morning I went to school and all the kids said they'd seen us on the telly the previous night. I watched it on the Thursday.

I also saw Laurel and Hardy at Dudley Hippodrome in 1952. My Dad was working on the roads right outside when they pulled up in a limousine. Mr Hardy came over to talk to him and kindly gave him some complimentary tickets. Good memories.

Mr J.P. Smith,

39 Parkes Hall Road, Woodsetton, Dudley.
