THIS postcard of St Matthew's Parish Church, Walsall, shows the church before the great advent of motor cars, so a clear view of the steeple and architectural style can be appreciated.

The ancient Church of St Matthew's stands on top of Church Hill and overlooks the town as it has for many centuries. The once famous Walsall Market, which has the distinction of being the first in English history to receive a Royal Charter, can be viewed from St Matthew's.

If the walls of the church could speak no doubt we would be surprised at what the messages would be! Who knows?

Michael Doyle,

26 Bernard Street, Walsall.
