The Lukes in their early days

CRADLEY HEATH ST LUKES FC has featured quite prominently in our sports columns over the last few weeks, and thanks to reader Bev Pegg we can now add a very rare image of an early Lukes team to our growing file on the club.

The team circa 1900.
The team circa 1900.

Bev wrote us as follows, “Following the most interesting series of articles about Cradley Heath St. Lukes Football Club, I am attaching a photograph of the team showing my grandfather William Pegg in the middle of the front row with the ball, pre- The Lukes in their early days sumably as captain of the side.

“My grandfather was born in 1881, consequently the date of the picture might have been around 1902 maybe? Due to him looking so young, I originally dated the picture around 1896, however if he was captain of the side, I would imagine that he was around 21 years of age at least. Anyhow, it might be worth publishing just in case any readers can identify other players and officials on this photograph, and maybe a more accurate date?.

“ The photograph was professionally taken to what I consider to be a very high standard by Chas F. Everitt of Cradley Road, Cradley Heath.

“ I also note that three of the players are wearing ties as part of their kit......quite trendy....David Beckham take note! “Hoping that this photo might be of interest”.
