Smethwick schoolboys in their 'Baggies'!

HERE is the final photograph from the collection of John Higgs of Tividale, which we have been sharing with you over recent weeks.

This shows his football team at Crocketts Lane Junior School, Smethwick, in season 1951/52. John is standing on the far right, but he cannot recall any more names. Can anyone help? Worthy of comment is the ‘baggyness’ of the shorts being worn by the boys (had they borrowed them from their dads we wonder)! Of course, the more famous West Bromwich Albion, just up the road from the school, were then and still are more often than not referred to by the club nickname, The Baggies. Several reasons have been put forward for the name, one being that the club’s footballers in the early days played in baggy shorts.

Therefore, it seems that these Crockett Lane lads were in very good company in the shorts department, and carried on the ‘baggy’ tradition years later!
