Palfrey pals nine decades past

THE photoghraph here certainly takes us back to the early days of school football, and although they were far from affluent times, the school authorities back ten were able to kit these boys out in a very impressive looking strip.

Our thanks go to Mr A. F. Cooper of Pelsall, Walsall, for loaning this very old photograph to us. It formerly belonged to his father, but no family members are featured in the team as far as is known.

The lads shown attended Palfrey Boys’ School at Walsall, and the season in question was 1920/21, so it takes us back over nine decades. As a result, if any of these young footballers happen to be alive today they must be one hundred years of age plus.

There are several names written on the rear of the photograph, but we are not aware in what order they appear in the line-up. The names are: Evans, Sedgwick, Barnes, Elson, Giffin, Hadley, C. Davis, Walker, A. Davis.

We wonder if any readers who are related will recognise a name or even a face amongst the team depicted? If so we’d be pleased to hear from you.
