THE truly atmospheric football team picture shown here is another in the collection of Raymond Franks of Stourport.
It is intetersring not only because of the era of the team (probably late 1800s), but what is behind the players in the background — spoil heaps fenced off by thick rope, and young girls an boys dressed in replica clothing of the adults (boys in thick jackets, waistcoats, long trousers, caps and mufflers, girls in aprons and smocks). The football team consists of eleven hardy players in long baggy ‘knickers’ (with one at least wearing and belt), and the goalkeeper is distinguished from the rest by his cap.
The trainer has the inevitable towel over his shoulder and the rest of the team officials are smartly dressed in the Victorian garb of the day.
But the name of the team and the location of the photograph are at present a mystery to us. Can anyone help?
