TWO weeks ago we published a photograph of the football team of St John’s, Kates Hill, winners of the schools league in the Dudley area, in season 1954/55. This has brought a response from one of the members of that team — Vincent Newey — but on the sbject of the equally successful cricket team from the same school, in the same year...
“I was delighted to see the photograph in the Bugle (1 December 2011) of the 1954/55 league - winning football team from St John's Junior School, Kates Hill, Dudley.
“I now have pleasure in attaching a photograph of the CRICKET team of the same school year, which also won the Dudley Junior League title, thus completing a magnificent double! Not bad for one of the smallest Junior schools in the area! “I recall the names as follows: Mr Meddings and Mr Robinson (Head); back row(left to right) Vincent Newey, Roy Mullett, John Roovers, Freddie Whitehouse, Alan Lloyd, Joseph Turley; front row (left to right) Tony Smith, Roger Woodall, Robert Checketts, Kenny Stanton and Robert Allen.
“I hope this is of some interest to you. Incidentally, I seem to remember that Mr Meddings was involved in coaching Dudley Boys football team when Duncan Edwards was playing for them. They were, I think, very successful at that time at a national level”.
