Brit Konta claims US Open win

Johanna Konta continued her brilliant run at the US Open with her first ever win in the main draw of a grand slam over Hungary's Timea Babos.

The British number five's only previous experience of grand slam tennis came in the first round of Wimbledon this year when, as a wild card, she pushed top-30 player Christina McHale all the way.

Konta marked her first time in qualifying by winning three matches against higher-ranked players last week and she produced the best performance of the lot to defeat world number 59 Babos 6-2 7-5.

The scoreline only told half the story, with Konta, who will climb considerably from her current ranking of 203, winning the final six games of the match and saving 10 set points in a remarkable ninth game of the second set.

In the opening set she had been much the better player against an out-of-sorts Babos and then showed her fighting spirit to win in an hour and 48 minutes in stifling conditions.

Konta, who has Hungarian parents, already looks a very valuable addition to the British ranks having switched allegiance in May from Australia, the land of her birth, to the country where she has lived for the last seven years.

Konta was supported in her citizenship application by the Lawn Tennis Association, and she said: "That was a very, very long process. There were so many questions being asked.

"It was something that I very much wanted out of the way because I have very much wanted GBR next to my name for a very long time. To finally have it is just a pure weight off my shoulders. I guess I don't know what it is to feel very British. But I feel that it's home. So I'm very happy to represent Great Britain."

Konta divides her time between Eastbourne, where her parents own a hotel, and the National Tennis Centre in London, where she trains under the guidance of Louis Cayer and Julien Picot.

She admits she still has some things to learn about being British, saying: "I'm embarrassed to say I don't know the national anthem yet. I promise I will learn it, quiz me next time."
