Blackheath school's sporting heritage

THE football team photograph here is another from Rowley Regis County Secondary Boys’ School (Britannia Road), to add to several others we have published from the same school over past years. As we’ve stated before, we doubt that any other school in the Black Country kept the local photographer busier, judging by the number of different sports teams which were captured on camera.

David E. Reynolds, of Oakham, Dudley, has sent in this photo, plus another of the school cross country team, which we will also publish in a forthcoming edition.

The photograph this week is of the Intermediate (Under 13) football team, season 1964/65.

David writes.... “I can recall almost everyone’s name.

“Back Row, left to right....

“Graham Allen, Paul Blakeway, David Reynolds, Brian Hickman, Brian (Young?). Robert Wallace, Elwyn Thomas (PE Teacher).

“Seated left, to right...

Joe Cockbill, Robert Hill, Colin Booth( Captain), Mr Grenville (Headmaster) Michael Smith, John Clarke, Brian Hemmings “Front row, sitting on floor left to right...

“Freddy Robinson, Stephen Young.

“We won the local schools’ knock out cup beating Tividale Comprehensive 3-1 in the final at Rowley Regis Grammar School, but missed out on the “Double”, finishing runners up in the league to Macefield Secondary Modern by a single point. I have a feeling this photo was taken before the cup final, hence the cup is not on display.

“Sadly the school was demolished in the early 2000’s and I often wondered what happened to all the numerous sporting team photos that adorned the walls surrounding the main hall? “I would like to think someone salvaged all these photos which were a pictorial history of the school’s sporting history”.
