MARKET DRAYTON 6
THIS week Wednesbury entertained Market Drayton, a game played in appalling conditions. The game started in heavy rain but soon deteriorated, thunder and lightning and heavy hail stones, at which point the ref took the players from the pitch.
This was a hard game for both sides and conditions did not help, but after ten minutes the ref considered it safe to carry on. From the restart the home side were soon into action, on the attack they drew the Drayton defence infield allowing Chris Bartley to receive the pass to go over in the corner for the first try, no conversion.
Shortly after Wednesbury were awarded a penalty, Tom Huggins converted. At this stage Wednesbury were the dominant side with their forwards going through phases of play keeping the visitors in their own half.
During one of these passages of play the ball was offloaded to John McGregor to go over for the second try, Tom Huggins converting.
However the home side allowed their visitors to get back into the game, Market Drayton kicking two penalties within a few minutes. But just before half time Wednesbury increased their lead with another penalty kicked by Tom Huggins, levaing the score Wednesbury 18 Market Drayton 6 at the break.
Wednesbury started the second half well but in allowing Market Drayton too much possession this restricted their play making. But Wednesbury's forwards were still controlling the game, and this paid off when Dale Doughty used his power and considerable bulk to drive over the line for their third try, Tom Huggins converting.
With ten minutes remaining Rhys Nickle collected the ball on the halfway line, danced and jinked his way through the Market Drayton defence, and scored Wednesbury's fourth try, Tom Huggins adding the conversion.
Coach Tom Huggins awarded Wednesbury's man of the match to Matt Dale.
With no game next week Wednesbury's next game is in two weeks' time away to Newcastle (staffs) ko 2-15.
Wednesbury 2nds lost a very close game against Bournville 3rds 7 points to 10.
