WILF ELLIS of Walsall has put our way
these two school sporting snaps, of
which he tells us:
“These two photographs were supplied
by Richard Cole, who lived on the Cannock
Road at Springfields. His parents had the terraced
shop on the Cannock Road between Beacon
Street and Bush Street.
“Richard went to the St Stephens Junior and
Infants School, which was by the old Butler’s
Springfield Brewery. “The photo at right
shows the St Stephens Junior School cricket
team of 1955.
“Richard went on to Springfield Boys Secondary
Modern School, and the photograph at
left shows that school’s Cross Country team,
with the trophy which they won in season 1958- 59.”
The boys in the cricket team lined up as follows:
From left, back row: J Hopkins, T Deans, R
Sharp, R Evanson, P Saunders, J Bullock, C
Bowkley. Front: R Cole, K Pemberton, L Stanhope,
J Reed, K Kidson. The Cross Country picture
shows, in the back row: Mr Jarrett, P
Nicholls, J Burgess. Front: G Bytheway, J
Watkins, A Parkes, K Nicholls, R Cole.
Wilf tells us that there will be a school reunion
on Wednesday 2nd October, for pupils who
attended St Stephens, Springfield Secondary
Modern, and Woden Road Junior School in
the late 1950s.
It will take place at the Great Western on Sun
Street; contact Wilf on 01922 713382 for more details.
