THE picture of a darts team fresh from the oche that was published on July 31, caught the eye of reader Valerie Roper from Tipton who told us with assurance: "I can name that pub. It was the Golden Cup in Toll End Road, and I used to work behind the bar."
With the identity of the pub established Valerie went on to name some of those in the photograph that was first provided by Les Hardy of Brierley Hill. Sitting on the far left is Reginald Thacker who owned the pub. Next right but one, the chap in the flat cap is Leonard Gill, followed by Ernest Rhodes, William Gill, Clifford Farnell and Thomas McTaggart. Can any readers name the three gents who are standing?
Among other items provided by Les was a Tividale and District Darts league fixture list for 1952, and more names appear written in pencil on the back. H. Pullen, J. Ellis, L. Whorton, L. Whitehouse, H. Jones, E.Kimberley, K. Shuttleworth, and a name very distinctive in the Black Country, S. Glasgow, both senior and junior.
The Tividale and District Darts League had its headquarters at the 'Albion Inn' in Tividale Road, Tipton, which has now sadly disappeared along with the Golden Cup. Other pubs or clubs on the fixture list include Nags Head, George Inn, Vono, Boat Inn, Old Port, Seven Stars, Red Lion, Brades Social, Gate Hangs Well, Ash Tree, Prince Rupert, Waggon, Jolly Brewer, Bell Inn. How many of these watering holes still exist?
