Aunty Florrie and Uncle John Hawthorne on one of their motorcycle trips

AS an avid reader of The Black Country Bugle, I have noticed a number of pictures of people from the Black Country enjoying themselves on holiday in some unusual places.

As a member of a family of motorcycle enthusiasts I am particularly drawn to those taken on the motorbike on Blackpool's famous pleasure beach.

This photograph was taken of my husband's aunt and uncle, Florence and John Hawthorne of Woodside, Dudley. Aunty Florrie and Uncle John, both keen motorcyclists, met around 1930 or thereabouts on the top of Dudley Castle.

In those days the taking of snuff was popular. Auntie Florrie's boyfriend at the time had offered her a pinch of snuff, after which she suffered a dreadful bout of sneezing!

Uncle John, as he was to become, offered her his spare clean handkerchief.

The rest is history as Auntie Florrie married Uncle John on February 8, 1936.

They were married for 63 years.

Thanking you as ever for your truly marvellous paper.

Mrs Alison Russon,

2 Teme Road,

Cradley,

Halesowen.
