Photography and glass plates of yore

IT is amazing how photography has changed in recent years, and now a leap has been made from the use of digital cameras to the cameras that every mobile phone seems to be equipped with.

But just for a few seconds we will take a leap in the opposite direction, to the age of the cumbersome camera and the photographic glass plate technology that began in the first half of the 19th century and was soon universally used. The example we have featured was brought to us by a reader nearly a quarter of a century ago and shows the Birmingham Railway Carriage Works in Smethwick circa 1920.

The development of the mobile phone camera has been so swift, who knows what the future may hold for photography in general.
