Photo brought back memories of dog and cat at the Fountain Inn who liked crisps

IN the Black Country Bugle (December 5 edition), Ken Johnson asks for a date of the photo of the Fountain, Clent.

I remember the Fountain Inn at Clent very well.

The horseshoe bar was like this from the middle 1950s to about 1970.

The Clent Hills and the Fountain were very popular with courting couples.

I remember the licensee had a cat and a large dog who were very partial to Smith's crisps, which they consumed rather a lot of from the customers.

The licensee was an antique dealer, and most of the items hanging from the walls and ceiling beams were for sale.

He also had a small antiques shop behind the pub in Adams Hill.

Sadly, as eating out was becoming more popular in the late 1960s, Banks's brewery changed the pub mainly into an eating out establishment, and as I remember, the place lost most of its characters.

The photograph bought back quite a few memories.

Happy days!

Ivan Hughes,
