YOUR?picture of Darlaston Comprehensive’s National Basketball champs (Bugle, June 6 edition) brought back many memories for me.
As another former pupil of ‘Darlo Comp’ from 1965 to 1973 I remember Ken Oliver as a fine athlete.
I also remember Garry Cook, who appears in the basketball team photo in the front row, far left, and as a future world-class athlete he won silver in the 1984 LA Olympics in the four by 400 metres relay.
I believe that throughout his career Garry’s preferred athletics event was actually the 800 metres but he had to compete at that distance against three of the all-time greats: Coe, Cram and Ovett!
I understand that Garry still teaches in the Walsall area.
Our school was a real hotbed of sporting talent in the early seventies, carefully nurtured by Barrie Mann and Doug Moore.
I'm still proud to have been part of the 1972 football first eleven that was the finest in the West Midlands that season, winning three trophies. Ken Oliver isn’t in the basketball photo.
He had left school a few years before and wasn’t a member of that team.
I mentioned him purely because he had supplied the previous comment regarding the photo and was someone I happened to remember. Hope this helps.
