When the bells were ringing for Dollie & Gilbert

WHAT a happy and heart-warming photograph this is, showing a young Black Country couple emerging from the church on the day of their wedding, watched by joyous family and friends, way back in the 1923.

The smiles on the faces, with confetti falling all around, says it all.

This image is one of small collection sent in to us by Terry Church of Wall Heath.

The happy couple were Gilbert Winnall and Dorothy Cartwright (better known as Dollie), who tied the knot in The Congregational Church at Wall Heath, on 20th August 1923.

Butchers They were well known in the village, for they together ran the butchers shop and slaughterhouse for many years, on the corner of High Street and Dudley Road.

Their daughter Di was born in 1934, and it is following Di’s recent passing that Terry, her cousin, has contacted us.
