West Bromwich carnival capers sixty years ago

WE are indebted to Alan Poole of Wigmore Fields, West Bromwich, for supplying this jolly photograph from circa 1950.

The eye-catching float.
The eye-catching float.

It was taken outside Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich and depicts members of Sandwell Tennis Club who had donned cowboy and cowgirl gear for the town carnival that year.

The tennis club members had won first prize for their impressive turn-out, on a float pulled by a lorry belonging to Horace Smith Transport of Black Lake.

Standing on the right is young Alan Poole, with his father Arthur, who was transport manager at H. Smith’s.

Alan’s mother is also in the shot, but not quite so visible, being seated in the lorry cab.
