BRYAN WILKES is one of many readers who moved away from home earlier in life but keep in touch with their roots via the Bugle. Now located in Sandy, Bedfordshire, Mr Wilkes has sent us a photograph, as well as a cartoon, of his Uncle Jack, who lived in West Bromwich in the early twentieth century and was by all accounts quite a character — as was his pony ...
“This was my late uncle, Jack Whitehouse, who used to live at 22A Albion Road, West Bromwich. The pony in the photograph came from a circus in 1900.
“On one occasion my mother was sitting on her own at the Wolverhampton races, when suddenly the pony appeared and went all around the course. It must have been very enjoyable!” Mr Wilkes has also sent us a cartoon which was drawn of his Uncle Jack, a few years later in life. Looking every bit the Black Country bloke in his flat cap and waistcoat, carrying a lantern and a lumphammer, he's preparing to take on any would-be intruders, with the phrase 'Robber? Just let 'em try!' “My uncle was a very strong man.” Mr Wilkes recalls. “People look out!”
