THIS probably wasn't the strongest box ever to bear the Chubb name, but it certainly does a good job of reminding us what this most famous of Wolverhampton firms was all about.
Regular readers won't be surprised to learn that it was shown to us by Molineux historian Graham Hughes, and forms part of the massive collection of Wolverhampton artefacts that he has lovingly pieced together over the years.
Made from tin or some other light metal, it's a lockable box, about eight inches high, made in the image of a Chubb safe. It may well have been one of those items that salesmen were well known for handing out in bygone times, especially as it has a list of Chubb offices and branches on the on the back. The main office was in London's Queen Victoria Street, with branches at Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and even Bombay. The factory was of course in Wolverhampton, the building still standing; but there were two further plants in Sydney, Australia, and Cape Town, South Africa.
