Pickfords of Walsall dragging a heavy load to Wales

HERE WE TAKE another peep into one of a collection of works magazines loaned to us by reader Stan Robinson, of Wednesfield.

The magazine, the Wellman Group Review, was printed for employees of the entire group, which owned Wellman Machines and Wellman Incandescent at Darlaston, and the picture we've chosen here shows a huge load passing through our area, hauled by a local company's transporter. The accompanying caption reads: "The crew of the Pickfords (Walsall) transporter take a breather at a lay-by just north of the Wolverhampton boundary during delivery of the first of the eight giant crane girders from Wellman Machines' Dukinfield factory to The Steel Co of Wales' Abbey Works, Port Talbot.

Girders "There are two of these 80 ft girders on each of four machines being supplied by the Darlaston company under a £1,750,000 contract for the total crane requirement in a new basic oxygen shop being built at the South Wales plant."
