When we printed a 1964 photograph of rock ’n’ roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis alongside the cream of local bands, many readers were able to identify the young musicians, but still one or two faces were left without names. Now we can fill in two more blanks.
Tony Groucutt emailed to identify his late brother Michael, better known by his stage name Kelly Groucutt. Tony wrote: “That small face peering over the right shoulder of Carl Wayne, next to the lad with the dark glasses, is my brother Michael (Kelly) Groucutt who at that time had his group Ricky Burns and the Vibras, with lead guitarist Terry Garvey, rhythm guitarist Les Willis, and bass guitarist Jim Groucutt (no relation).
“Michael later went on to star with Greenwich Village, Marble Arch, and Sight and Sound, with Roger Spencer, before going to ELO.” Marion Levene, whose late husband Gerry Levene was also in the picture, confirmed that it was taken at Birmingham Town Hall and provided us with one more name – Dario Capulvi, saxophone player with The Beachcombers.
