THIS rather austere photograph captures a big gathering of Blackheath womenfolk, probably in the 1920s, outside Birmingham Road Church, with a reverend gentleman sitting in their midst.
This must have been an important social event, perhaps a church outing, with all the ladies in their ‘Sunday Best’, including an array of quite sizable hats; in fact we cannot spot a lady who was not donning a hat that day. Some of the ladies at the front were a real throwback to the Victorian age Our thanks go to Jim Adams for supplying this picture, together with a later one which we shall print next week. He can only name one lady — Bessy Rose, on the far left of the fourth row.
