BERYL and John Wilkes put their best feet forward when it comes to showing off their home town. A few months ago their hard work culminated in the publication of a series of postcards of various scenes of Coseley which have sold very well, and now the old year is beginning to draw to a close, they have just launched the 'Coseley Calendar' for 2008.
Each designated monthly page of the calendar contains photos, old and new, comparative scenes which in some cases are a hundred years apart, and brief descriptions that tell their own story. The Roseville Methodist Chapel Sunday School Anniversary of April 1949 is remembered; The Boat Inn down Havacre Lane shown at its prime in the 1960s, but now sadly derelict; Tunnel Street in 1971 before the demolition of terraced housing changed its appearance forever; and much, much more.
We have highlighted two months in particular, August and November. In an interview with our own Harry Harrison, Beryl took her own photo of him at his home in Coseley and used this picture as a fitting tribute to the man of Black Country mirth who died last August. November is the month we reflect on the sacrifices made by our war dead, and those who survived the battlefield. Brothers Isaac and Malcolm Morgan were both killed during the Great War, and they represent the eleventh month of the year.
Beryl has informed us the calendars are now on sale at various outlets in Coseley, including Movie Magic, Regards, the Post Office, and Lynn's Flower Cabin, and they will also be available from the Bugle Shop from Friday 2nd November. They retail at £2.95 (+70 p p&p). For further details contact Beryl Wilkes on 01902 491583.
