THE former grammar schools of the Black Country provide a ceaseless source of memories for Bugle readers and we are always happy to publish old photographs and memories of schooldays. This picture, from a little over 50 years ago, has been sent in by Alan Willetts of Swindon, and it shows his classmates at Dudley Grammar School.
Alan writes, “In going through some old photographs I came across this picture of form 3A at Dudley Grammar School. By my calculations it must have been taken in the summer of 1957.
“The form teacher at the centre of the group is Mr Hodgetts, who lived in Tividale.
“Some of the lads were in short trousers as they had not met the required height to wear long trousers in the lower school. Once in the 4th year long trousers could be worn by all.
“I am not able to name all of the class but working from left to right and starting on the back row, here goes: “Reynolds, Baker, Baxter, Flavell, Laurie, Boyling, myself, Sutherland and Ashman.
“Third row, unknown, unknown, Hughes, Fereday (an athlete with Tipton Harriers), unknown, Shrimpton, Burns, unknown, unknown, and Powell.
“Second row, Roy Kent (known as Dripper Kent, who belonged to a local pop group), unknown, unknown, Howard, Mr Hodgetts, Hughes, Homer, Cartwright and Cooper. Front row, unknown, unknown, James, M. James and Keeling.
