Eric follows a couple of his clubmates into the Bilston pool

WE RECENTLY borrowed a collection of items from reader Mary Woodhall, which featured her late father Dennis Bayliss and his bowling exploits.

Among those items were a couple of editions of Dennis's old works' magazine, Thompson News (he worked at John Thompson's on Peartree Lane, Dudley) and those old publications, just two pages each, feature some interesting photographs of other sporting goings-on; one of which we feature here.

Pictured are members of the John Thompson Swimming Club, who had been able to obtain an extension to the usual hours at Bilston Baths for a few months, getting it to themselves from 8 till 10pm on a Thursday evening.

Just leaving the diving board is Eric Ashcroft, club secretary and Testing Department employee, with two unnamed swimmers about to hit the water ahead of him.
