THIS short story is all about the object in the photograph, an interesting artefact found by Ron Barratt of Wednesbury back in 1987 when he used to live in Darlaston.

He brought it to our attention and told us, "It was found during a normal domestic dig in Blockall, just off St Lawrence Way, near where a pub called the Dog & Partridge (or Pheasant) was located which I think was run by Atkinson Breweries."

It measures roughly 2 inches square and is made of brass, and as Ron suggested it could be linked with the livery of a dray horse or similar from years ago. Ron would be greatly interested if Bugle readers could help identify it. There is a metal loop on the back where a leather strap could have been fed through, and the maker's name is "Spender of London", but so far research has not revealed anything about this company.
