Likely lads in the market place in Coronation year

The lads in the picture above are standing by the fountain and the tram terminus in Dudley market place waiting for the next car to depart to destinations such as Netherton, Old Hill, Blackheath, Cradley, etc in the year 1911. Flags and banners elsewhere around the market place suggest the photograph was taken at the time of King George V's Coronation on June 22.

But the lads might be patiently waiting for the young ladies of the town to walk by, an image that immediately makes songs like George Formby's "Leaning on a lamppost"(1937) and "Standing on the corner" by the Four Lads (1956) spring to mind. These chaps are ghosts to us now 103 years later, but a photograph from this era always begs the question, how many of these young men survived the First World War?
