Four former Sandwell councillors with more than 100 years service between them have been made honorary aldermen in a special ceremony. Sandwell Mayor Councillor Linda Horton carried out the investiture on Tuesday, 31st July.The honour was given to David Hinton, his wife Pauline, Martin Prestidge and Sadie Smith.Mrs Hinton served as mayor in 2010/11. She served for 24 years in the Langley Ward, 1984 - 1992 and 1996 - 2012. She was also deputy leader of the council from 2004 - 2009.
Mr Hinton served for 21 years in the Tividale Ward until 2011. He was the council’s lead member on the West Midlands Fire Authority for nine years and was chair from 2001 to 2007 and for the municipal year 2010/2011.
Mrs Smith served for 30 years in the Great Barr with Yew Tree Ward until 2012. She was mayor in 2006/2007. She was also leader of the borough's opposition Liberal-Democrat party for a number of years.
Mr Prestidge served for 28 years representing the Rounds Green ward on the former Warley Council 1971 - 1973, Soho Ward 1973 - 1975 and Langley Ward 1984 - 2011. He was mayor in 2003/4.
