More flights cancelled due to storm

Britons trying to get home from the US have been left to endure at least one more day in storm-tossed New York with UK airlines forced to cancel more flights.

But with UK travellers staying on in hotels as Superstorm Sandy lashed the Big Apple, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic were able to resume some flights to America's East Coast.

Virgin has had to axe all its New York and Newark flights and also announced that one flight from New York and one from Newark that would have arrived at Heathrow on Wednesday morning had been cancelled.

But Virgin was also able to resume its daily services to two other eastern US cities - Washington DC and Boston.

A Virgin spokeswoman said: "Passenger and crew safety is our number one priority and we are continuously liaising with local authorities to assess the situation and minimise the disruption caused to passengers wherever possible.

"We continue to thank our passengers for their patience and apologise for the inconvenience caused to their journey. We advise all passengers to check our website www.virginatlantic.com for the latest updates and advice on rebooking their flights."

BA has had to cancel all flights to and from New York, Newark, Baltimore and Philadelphia but was able to operate a normal three-flight service to and from Boston and was also able to have one flight to Washington.

American carriers also had to axe some US services to and from the UK. These included American Airlines, Delta and US Airways.
