Children 'in area' as man shot dead
A man has been shot dead in north Belfast.
It is understood the victim was hit close to shops at Longlands Road, Newtownabbey.
People in the area at the time claimed a number of children were standing only yards away when a gunman opened fire.
Sinn Fein councillor Gerry O'Reilly said people were left in a state of shock. He added: "Those responsible have shown an absolute disregard for the local community. It was a reckless and dangerous action."
One unconfirmed report claimed the man, who was well known in the area, was hit several times, at least once in the face.
Later a car was found burned out in west Belfast and it is believed police are investigating if it was linked to the shooting.
