I WONDER if any of your readers may be able to help me with identifying a soldier from the Great War who is commemorated on the War Memorial in Wednesbury?

His name is Roland Mitchell, No 18661 of the 8th Service Battalion, South Staffs Regiment, born at Hill Top, West Bromwich. He was killed in action on April 23, 1917.

I have traced two Roland Mitchells born in Hill Top.

The first one, born in 1880, is known to have been on the army reserve list and enlisted on August 25, 1914, in the 4th Staffordshire Regiment army, no 9652. However, his military records indicate that he was discharged due to medical grounds on October 20, 1914.

The second Roland Mitchell, born in 1895, enlisted on December 10, 1914, 1/5th Staffordshire Regiment, army no 49040, discharged on September 23, 1919. Any information would be appreciated.
