Goalie Mac McIlreath remembered

JOHN Thompson of Kingswinford has been in touch regarding a feature on page 32 of our 14th November edition.

The picture at the top of that page showed a Wolverhampton College football side, in 1948, with the Charity Cup and several smaller trophies they'd scooped that season, and John recognised one of the players.

The goalkeeper, third from right in the second row from the back, was Mac McIlreath, who John knew in the early 1960s. Mac was then manager of Firth Cleveland Machine Tools in Wolverhampton's Merridale Street, and he also ran the firm's cricket team. Outside work, he played cricket for Wombourne Cricket Club.

Mac is also thought to have run a table tennis team in Wolverhampton, as well as having some connections with the Beacon Centre for the Blind just over the border in Sedgley.

Though he wasn't Scottish, he wasn't local either. John thinks he may have been from London or the south east originally.
