REGULAR readers won't even need telling that these girls were from the Brierley Hill works team at Handy Angle, such has their coverage in the Bugle been in recent weeks.
This picture has been brought in by Norton, Stourbridge reader David Pope, whose late wife Sylvia, nee Dickens, was a member of the team and is on the left in this picture. She was nicknamed Sugarfoot, says David, such were her talents.
Also shown are, from left: Jean Wood (who shared her memories of those times with us three weeks ago), Jean Richardson and Barbara Henley.
The picture was originally taken to accompany a piece in a local paper, and headed 'Handy Angle Too Good for Darlaston'.
The report ran as follows:
"Handy Angle's women's soccer team continued in winning form with a 3-0 win over Darlaston at Kingswinford on Wednesday night.
"They have now won all four matches this season. An early goal by inside right Margaret Parkes gave Handy Angle a 1-0 lead, but the game was still wide open at half time. Both teams played well and things were very even until the Darlaston team's stamina began to flag in the last 20 minutes.
"In the latter stages the Darlaston defence made several mistakes, which Brierley Hill were quick to seize upon. Jean Baxter, the inside left, scored twice for Handy Angle to settle the issue. It was a hard, well fought game and a good number of people turned up to watch. Proceeds were for the Kingswinford Old People's Fund."
