THE sun was shining, and these Wolverhampton boys were no doubt proud of their place in the school team, and looking forward to the upcoming season.
But this was 1938-39, and it would prove to be the last season of normal play for some years. League football was suspended until the war was over, some six years away, and these lads would, presumably, have been old enough to be called up just before the war was over.
Our thanks to reader Robert Bird of Penn, the lad holding the ball, for lending it to us, and supplying almost all the names of his team mates.
Robert tells us that the picture was taken at Bushbury Hill Junior School, and he names his fellow footballers as follows:
Back row, from left: Eric Scrivens; Eric Cooper; ?; John Warnock; ___ Crutchley; Dennis Slimon; ___ Bentley.
Front row: Norman Payne; Alan Cowell; Robert Bird; John Beddows; Frank Horn.
The teacher, who doesn't look that much older than his players, was Mr Ashall.
And if you look closely, right at the bottom of the picture, just behind the captain's feet, you can see that the goalkeeper – usually the tallest man in any team, is actually standing on a pile of books!
If you can tell us anything more about this Bushbury team, or have school photographs of your own that you'd like to see in the Bugle, send them in to the usual address, give us a call, or email gjones@blackcountry bugle.co.uk.
