IT MUST have been quite an adventure back in 1955,
for these Dudley boys to be heading off to the continent.
Having grown up with the rationing which was still in
place from the war, lads of this age were more than used
to making do, and holidays abroad were something that
only the very well off were able to enjoy. And the fact
that the young footballers’ destination was Germany, a
country which had been our sworn enemy only ten years
before, must have made the visit all the more exciting.
Our thanks to Dudley reader Harold Halford for supplying this picture, which shows a team representing Dudley Schoolboys in the mid-fifties.
Harold, who was fourteen or fifteen at the time, is second from left in the back row.
Other lads in the team, though not necessarily shown in this photograph, included Oswald Henry, Bobby Watson, Reeves, Andrews and Beardsmore.
Let us know if you recognise any of the lads in this picture, or if you were yourself one of the boys bound for Germany. Call, write, or send
