Dudley Zoological Gardens helped celebrate Britain’s fabulous flora and fauna as part of BBC’s Summer of Wildlife event last Saturday.
DZG Presenter Becky Iwahashi joined BBC TV presenters Ellie Harrison (Countryfile and Britain’s Big Wildlife Revival), Mike Dilger (The One Show), David Lindo (aka the ‘urban birder’), Martin Hughes-Games (Springwatch) and Dr Rhys Jones (Wildlife Patrol) at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, last Saturday (September 14) accompanied by animals from the zoo’s collection.
Visitors to the free event, which ran from 10am until 5pm, were able to meet DZG’s peregrine falcons, kestrels and buzzards, as well as having the opportunity to get their hands on African land snails, snakes, ferrets and a salamander.
Presenter Becky Iwahashi, said: “It was a great event for families to find out more about the vast variety of British wildlife which can be found every day around us.
“I also took part in a number of animal showcases throughout the day, where I talked about some of DZG’s native species and hopefully tried to inspire children to look out for the wildlife around them.”
In addition to the animal talks, there was also an opportunity for visitors to test their own wildlife knowledge against the BBC presenters in a family quiz, take part in TV presenting, as well as meeting BBC camera and sound experts who revealed the secrets of wildlife filming.
As well as DZG, other groups taking part included the RSPB, The Beekeepers’ Association, Sealife Centre, and Canal and River Trust.
