Darlaston Comprehensive featured five England internationals

NO PRIZES for guessing the decade — this picture clearly dates from the early seventies.

It’s not too often we get to feature a basketball team in Bugle Sport, so we’re more than happy to bring you this shot of Darlaston Comprehensive School’s Under 16 side.

The picture arrived by post recently and with no sender’s details, but a full list of names nevertheless.

They were, starting from left in the back row: Bernie Jones, Keith Millington, Andy Bailey, John Till, Michael Roy, Shane Edwards, John Loydon, teacher Jock Weir.

Front row: Gary Cook, Steve Fereday, Gary Hadlington, Dave Cordell, Malcolm James.

Darlaston Under 16s were quite a side. They included five England internationals, and won the National Individual Schools Championship in 1973, beating Liverpool side Alsop Comprehensive over two legs.
